European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques. User operation started in September 2017.
In the context of the PaNOSC (Photon and Neutron Open Science Cloud) project which is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement number 823852) we are looking for a
Software Engineer (f/m) - Open Science Cloud Developer
The position¶
work in a team to enable data analysis at the European XFEL through software integration and development
use, improve and develop Jupyter based tools and services
support provision of the services on the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC)
work with members of the Jupyter team and contribute to open source software
work with XFEL users to support data analysis of leading edge experiments
Requirements¶
Master or Phd degree in Physics, Computer Science or a related field
good Python knowledge
experience with at least some libraries and tools from the scientific computing Python ecosystem such as numpy, scipy, matplotlib, pandas, ploty, bokeh, xarray
English is the working language, hence very good communication skills in English are necessary
experience or interest in software engineering methods for computational and data science (version control, tests, continuous integration)
Experience in the following is desired:
Jupyter, including JupyterLab/Notebook, Binder, widgets
virtualisation, containers and virtual machines
high performance computing as a user or administrator
Additional experience with Javascript, container orchestration systems such as Kubernetes, and work experience in photon science are advantegeous. The desired skillset is diverse, and training on the job will be provided.

Remuneration¶
Salary and benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany. In addition European XFEL provides a non-contributory company pension scheme as well as broad relocation benefits. The European XFEL GmbH intends to achieve a widely international staff. Non-German candidates hired from abroad receive an international allowance.
Duration¶
The appointment is limited to the project duration until 31 December 2022.
