Congratulations to Dr Mark, who was examined by Richard Evans and Denis Kramer on 25 May 2017.

Best Poster price for computational skyrmionics¶

images/2016-poster-prize-marijan-640b.jpeg

Less than 12 months after the last best poster prize, Marijan wins another one for new work on computational skyrmionics, carried out using Jupyter Notebook, Matplotlib, FEniCS and Southampton’s Finmag code.

Poster (pdf) and associated pre-print (arxiv) are available online.

Welcoming Gary and Emma, and last coding sprint in room 5041¶

images/2016-10-sprint.jpeg

The last coding sprint in room 176/5041; from next week onwards we’ll be in 176/5003. A big welcome to Emma and Gary who join the team this year.

Max Albert passes his PhD Viva¶

Congratulations to Dr Max (visible on the photograph with his examiners Prof Dieter Suess from Vienna and Prof Kees de Groot, and himself). (Jul 2016)

Marijan Beg passes his PhD Viva – new Pokemon discovered¶

people/2016-07-marijan-viva-pub-640.png

Congratulations to Dr Marijan Beg passing his PhD viva. Thanks to Prof Jim Miles from Manchester and Denis Kramer from Southampton acting as examiners. During the evening celebrations, a new type of #PokemonGo creature has been discovered: the Skyrmini. It likes to appear in pairs (see picture above). (Jul 2016)

Poster prize at international conference in San Diego¶

images/2016-poster-prize-marijan-640.jpeg

EPSRC-funded PhD student Marijan Beg wins a poster prize at the International conference for Magnetism and Magnetic Materials in San Diego (January 2016) with his work on computational modelling of skyrmionic systems. The software used has been developed jointly within the group over several years. The work is summarised here.

Thomas Kluyver - locally known as Mr Jupyter - arrives in Southampton¶

people/2015-Thomas-and-Victoria.jpg

A big welcome to Dr Thomas Kluyver who joins us from the Jupyter team in Berkeley and will push Jupyter and its integration and use in computational science and engineering from Southampton. The penguin is his new mascot and called Victoria. (Dec 2015)

Dmitri Chernyshenko passing his PhD Viva¶

people/Dmitri-viva-2015.jpg

Thank you Thomas Schrefl and Ian Hawke for examining the work, and congratulations Dr Dmitri :) (Dec 2015).

Prof Peter Metaxas visiting Southampton¶

Coding sprints 2014¶

people/2014-extreme-programming-640.jpg

Every two weeks, the whole group spends a day extreme programming in the same room. Sounds geeky, but turns out to be very effective and actually very enjoyable. Picture is taken after 8 hours of work - what a happy bunch given it was a Friday afternoon.¶
