GNU/Linux is a free operating system
consisting of the Linux kernel and the GNU-tools.
(It is usually referred to as "Linux" even though the term "GNU/Linux"
would be more accurate.)
Overall, its appearance and handling is
very similar to UNIX. It is a multi-user system with strong network
capabilities and it is famous for its
stability. Several companies provide Linux "distributions" which can be
downloaded or bought. It is a matter of taste and requirements which
one
to choose. Examples are Debian, Ubuntu, Mandriva (formerly Mandrake), SuSE, and Gentoo.
Apple's Mac OS X operating system is based on Linux.
